The perfume in Europe
1700-1799
It was in the middle of the 18th century that the first perfumery and cosmetics establishments were established. In a short time their essences and ointments triumphed in the Royal Houses. It is the time of the reign of Louis XV of France (1715-1774) and in England of the reign of George II (1727-1760).
Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764) was the greatest exponent of Rococo glamour.
She was a lover of King Louis XV of France, an educated woman, sensitive to art and intelligent, she was very fond of perfumes.
In this painting by the artist François Boucher we see her portrayed in a moment of her “toilette”.

J. FLORIS in England
One of the most important perfume manufacturers in England is not English, he is a Spaniard from the island of Menorca.
Juan Femenías Florit emigrated with his wife Elizabeth to London and established his first shop in 1730, at 89 Jeremy Street in London’s elegant St James’ district.
He changed his name from FLORIT to FLORIS because it was easier to pronounce in English.
Today, almost 300 years after its creation, the soul of the company is still installed in the same building where the company was founded and is run by its descendants.

Luxury perfume windows
At the beginning of the 19th century, there were only a few commercial establishments in Spain where foreign perfumes were sold. In Madrid, the Perfumería Casa FORTIS, located in the central Puerta del Sol, was the first establishment to open in 1823.

EL SIGLO Department stores. Barcelona
In the last quarter of the 19th century, the Department Stores were established in the main European capitals, where perfumery was assigned an outstanding space as a specialised section, and in the pavilions of the Universal Exhibition, luxurious showcases were made to present perfumery.

In the rest of Europe, 19th century perfumers also set up establishments decorated with the utmost luxury. In London, the brand’s founder, William Henry Penhaligon’s, arrived in the city in the 1860s to make a fortune and so began his illustrious career. Creative and ambitious, William was inspired by the scents of the Turkish baths of nearby Jeremy Street and created his first perfume, Hammam Bouquet, in 1874.
